Summary
Karina strengthened rapidly into a major Category 3 hurricane by 2 p.m. and held 125 mph winds at 5 p.m., about 985 miles west-southwest of Baja California’s southern tip.
Forecasters expect Karina to strengthen further over the next day or so as it moves west near 9 mph, then turn west-northwest Monday night into Tuesday over open water.
Lowell remained a 50 mph tropical storm at 5 p.m., about 900 miles east-southeast of Hilo, moving west at 12 mph and still forecast to pass south of Hawaii.
That system is expected to become a hurricane by Monday night or Tuesday, but Hawaii County Civil Defense said Lowell poses no immediate threat to the islands.
The two Pacific systems are being watched together because earlier forecasts said Lowell’s late-week strength could depend on how closely it interacts with the larger Karina.
