Karina became a Category 1 hurricane Sunday with 80 mph sustained winds, centered about 880 miles west-southwest of Baja California and moving west-northwest at 9 mph.
Open Pacific waters are expected to fuel steady or rapid strengthening, and the National Hurricane Center said the storm could reach major-hurricane status—Category 3 or higher, at least 111 mph—within about a day.
Its forecast track keeps Karina far out at sea with no immediate land threat, though swells could bring dangerous surf and rip currents to parts of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.
Lowell, elsewhere in the Pacific, remained a 50 mph tropical storm about 985 miles east-southeast of Hilo and could strengthen into a hurricane by Monday night or Tuesday.
