Kirk Heilbrun told jurors Lindsay Clancy likely killed her 3 children as part of a suicide plan, not because a male voice commanded her during postpartum psychosis.
He said Clancy had months of intrusive suicidal thoughts and believed her children would suffer without her, supporting prosecutors’ argument that the January 2023 killings were calculated.
Heilbrun called her account of a command hallucination implausible because she reported hearing the voice only during the roughly 18 minutes it took to kill 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan.
A defense mistrial bid failed after Heilbrun referenced Catholic teachings and “mortal sin”; the judge struck that testimony and told jurors to disregard it.
The testimony is part of the prosecution’s rebuttal to defense mental-health experts, with closing arguments expected Wednesday and jury deliberations likely this week.
