He got it working only through custom coding and reverse engineering. That means compatibility depends not just on the connector and physical fit, but also on whether the car’s software will recognize and activate the charger. There does not appear to be a hard security lock on the parameter yet. Gapiński said the setting is “not a secure parameter for now,” which implies Tesla could tighten it later in a software update. If that happens, owners of older cars might find the upgrade blocked unless Tesla officially supports the retrofit. Hardware limits matter too. The retrofit appears workable only on refreshed Juniper Model Y Premium and Performance trims, not the Standard trim, and older pre-refresh Model Ys use a different center console, so the part will not fit at all. Model 3 Highland may be possible, but that has not been broadly confirmed. So the real answer is that a hidden software lock is possible, and in practice there is already a software barrier of sorts.
