Summary
Lawmakers in Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin said they have already started talks on joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact after Democrats won full control of those state governments.
Those four states hold 48 electoral votes, enough to push the compact from 222 to the 270 needed for it to take effect and bind members to back the national popular-vote winner.
Arizona, with 11 electoral votes, was also projected to gain a Democratic trifecta, though not all races had been called by Thursday evening.
The compact has been adopted by 18 states and Washington, D.C., but expanding it remains politically difficult even with Democrats' midterm gains and a hoped-for path before 2028.
