Summary
996 new images, 814 GB of observations and 521 minutes of crew audio released this week gave the first scientific readout from Artemis II’s April lunar flyby.
Five impact flashes spotted by the astronauts were confirmed as meteoroid strikes on the lunar surface, with the crew relying on real-time visual notes because the events were too brief to photograph.
Crew observations also mapped subtle lunar colors — including green, yellow, brown and blue tones — that scientists said could help identify different rocks, minerals and volcanic histories.
Far-side passes delivered close views of an illuminated region no humans had previously seen this way, while the terminator line exposed sharp shadows and topography that stood out in backlit conditions.
The release expands the 800-plus GB public Artemis II archive and gives scientists fresh human observations to support analysis ahead of future Artemis moon missions.
