Summary
NASA’s 130-page Artemis II preliminary science report says astronauts saw yellow, brown, green, blue and tan lunar features during a nearly seven-hour flyby just 4,000 miles above the moon.
Aristarchus Plateau stood out with yellow shades, brown streaks and volcanic terrain; report authors said the hues may reflect titanium-rich orange glass and magnesium-rich green glass linked to ancient eruptions.
Orientale Basin also drew attention, with the crew describing gray, tan and green terrain, “swamp-like” outer rings and crater chains spreading from the giant impact site.
The report draws on 814 gigabytes of Orion photo, video and audio data and argues trained human observers added real-time geological interpretation that cameras alone could not provide.
Those observations are expected to help guide where later Artemis missions land and explore as agencies push toward a longer-term lunar presence.
