Two Dominican Migrants Held in Bronx Detective Stabbing, Facing Attempted Murder Charges

Q: What crucial clue led federal marshals to discover the fleeing suspects hiding inside a secret basement recording studio states away?

The key break in the case was that Detective Jose Mercedes reportedly managed to rip off one attacker’s mask during the struggle, giving investigators a critical lead in identifying and tracing the suspects. From there, authorities developed additional intelligence that the men had traveled into Massachusetts. Reports say investigators then got a tip they were possibly in the Lynn area, and surveillance of an associate helped narrow the search to a Central Avenue house. Officers entered the basement, where they heard music and voices from a recording studio, and found the two men hiding there. So the crucial clue was the mask removed during the attack, which helped launch the trail that ultimately led marshals to the secret basement studio in Lynn.

Lynn, Massachusetts, police and U.S. marshals arrested D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, who were ordered held without bail and are expected to be returned to New York to face attempted murder charges.
Oct. 2, the two men allegedly ambushed off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes, 33, as he cleaned his car trunk in the Bronx, trying to steal his gold chain before stabbing and slashing him seven times.
NYPD said Caraballo was the alleged slasher and Mejia drove the motorized bike used in the escape after the chain was taken.
Mercedes, a 10-year veteran assigned to the 44th Precinct, has been released from Jacobi Medical Center and told the New York Post he is recovering after fellow officers greeted him outside the hospital.
