2 Illegal Migrants Sought in Stabbing of Off-Duty NYPD Detective, Despite Prior New York Arrests

Q: With the e-bike attackers still at large in the Bronx, what critical detail in the surveillance video might finally bring them to justice?

The most important clue is likely a clear identifying feature captured on the surveillance video or stills — especially the suspects’ faces, any distinctive tattoos, scars, hairstyle, or unique clothing details, as well as the specific make, color, or markings of the motorized e-bike they used to flee. So far, police have publicly described one suspect as shirtless, wearing black sweatpants and black sneakers, and the other as wearing a black hoodie, black sweatpants, and black sneakers. Those descriptions are broad, which means investigators will be looking for sharper visual details in the footage that can separate these men from countless others in the area. In cases like this, even a small detail in the video can be decisive: a logo on the hoodie, a visible tattoo, the exact chain-snatching sequence, or a unique component on the bike such as decals, a basket, modified frame, or damage. Investigators can match those details against other camera footage, prior arrest photos, neighborhood recognition, and tipster information. The NYPD has already released the surveillance video and images and is urging the public to help identify the men. If the footage shows a recognizable face or a distinctive feature tied to either suspect or the e-bike, that could be the detail that finally leads detectives to them.

Two Dominican men — Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia Bautista, 24 — are being sought for allegedly stabbing off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes during an attempted chain robbery; Mercedes has since been released from hospital.
Police said the suspects tried to grab Mercedes’ gold chain as he cleared his car trunk, then stabbed and slashed him multiple times when he fought back. He chased them for two blocks before collapsing.
DHS said both men entered the U.S. illegally through Arizona, were apprehended and released, and later built criminal records in New York while remaining in the country unlawfully.
Caraballo’s prior arrests included weapon, drug and fleeing charges, while Bautista had arrests for stolen property, grand larceny and weapon possession. DHS said New York releases and sanctuary-policy limits kept ICE from holding them.
