$1 billion in UN budget cuts have now been pushed through by U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz, including a historic 15% reduction in the regular budget that he said will eliminate nearly 3,000 headquarters positions.
$570 million of those cuts came from the regular budget alone, which Waltz told Congress would save U.S. taxpayers $126 million as his team targets what it calls an overstaffed, overpaid bureaucracy.
100,000 UN staff and long-running peacekeeping missions are central to the overhaul, with Waltz moving to end reimbursement practices he said let countries use deployments as "cash cows" and questioning missions that have lasted 30 to 80 years.
A $600 million administrative cut and hiring freeze were already flagged last year as the UN grappled with a liquidity crisis, giving added urgency to U.S. pressure for broader restructuring.
