Summary
Thousands of NYPD officers are being deployed across New York City this week as nearly 200 national delegations arrive for the U.N. General Assembly in what officials call a heightened security environment.
Uniformed officers around U.N. headquarters will be backed by heavy weapons, aviation and harbor units, K-9 teams, bomb squads, drones and counterterrorism teams, with additional measures kept out of public view.
Monday through Friday, a citywide gridlock alert will bring rolling street and pedestrian closures near the U.N. and elsewhere, with parts of the FDR Drive shutting at certain times as delegations move.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to address the assembly Tuesday and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, while police say they expect demonstrations and will coordinate with organizers but not tolerate violence or property damage.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said there are no credible threats, but residents and commuters near Midtown are still being urged to stay vigilant and prepare for major disruptions.
