DOJ Threatens 30 States Over 2024 Election Records as Voter-Data Suits Stall

At least 30 top state election officials received Justice Department letters ordering them to preserve all 2024 election records because they are under investigation and in ongoing litigation.
The push expands the department’s effort to obtain unredacted voter rolls and other election data, including personal identifiers such as driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers.
The letters do not specify whether the probe is criminal or civil and cite no criminal statutes, instead echoing Trump-backed claims about machine anomalies and noncitizen voting.
The Justice Department has sued 30 states for the data, lost 23 cases and won none so far, while multiple studies have found noncitizen voting to be exceedingly rare.
