Tropical Storm Lowell Weakens 390 Miles From Lihue as Hawaii Flood Watch Stays Up

Lowell was 390 miles north-northwest of Lihue at 11 p.m. Tuesday, weakening and moving north at 14 mph after passing west of Niihau.
Kauai County still saw strong impacts from Lowell’s closest pass: Barking Sands logged 51 mph sustained winds with an 84 mph gust, while Lihue Airport recorded 54 mph winds and a 79 mph gust.
The storm is forecast to turn northwest and then west on Wednesday and Thursday, taking it farther from Hawaii, though rough surf and dangerous rip currents are expected along exposed coasts for another day or so.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for Hawaii Island through Wednesday afternoon, extending hazards after Lowell earlier hit the state as a Category 2 hurricane and followed days of wider damage across the islands.
