Summary
Gov. Josh Green asked President Trump for federal help as Hawaii struggled with damage from Hurricane Lowell, the second hurricane to hit the state in recent weeks.
Thousands remained without power Thursday, with Kauai — an island of about 73,000 people — facing gas lines, damaged roads and downed power lines after Lowell passed Monday and Tuesday.
Two deaths appear linked to Lowell, and authorities said the storm damaged piers and ports, demolished beachfront buildings and knocked out power for most of Kauai.
Green said Lowell may have caused more damage than 1992's Hurricane Iniki, which killed at least 7 people and caused $1.8 billion in damage, though full assessments are still underway.
The request comes after Hurricane Lala hit the Big Island in mid-August, dumping more than 2 feet of rain, destroying about 100 homes and killing 3 people.
