Summary
Intel’s x86 CPU share slipped to 69.3% in the second quarter, down 6.5 percentage points year over year and below 70% for the first time since 1995, while AMD reached a record 30.7%.
Mercury Research said AMD gained faster in servers and PCs as AI-driven spending and supply constraints reshaped demand; Intel’s server share fell to 65.5%, or 53.6% on an adjusted basis that excludes Intel-counted embedded chips.
59% year-over-year revenue growth at Intel’s Data Center Group still pointed to a rebound in demand, and the company said it has signed 10 long-term CPU supply agreements while working to expand capacity.
28.9% laptop share and 34.9% desktop share for AMD showed its strongest PC gains, with desktop shipments down more than 20% as higher prices and limited GPU supply diverted components toward data centers.
Arm-based competition is also intensifying from Nvidia, AWS, Apple and Qualcomm, adding pressure as Intel tries to diversify through foundry, custom silicon and a reworked AI chip strategy.
