Redshift-2 observations show a spiral galaxy with a bright red core that matches little red dot signatures in infrared and ultraviolet, while faint Chandra X-rays reveal a heavily obscured, X-ray-weak active galactic nucleus.
Simulations found that if Saguaro were seen about 1 billion years after the Big Bang, most of its galactic structure would vanish from view, leaving only a nucleus resembling the little red dots JWST first spotted in 2022.
The result supports the idea that little red dots are a developmental phase of galaxies growing supermassive black holes, rather than a separate class of object, and suggests even the Milky Way may have passed through that stage.
