Las Vegas remarks from Trump repeatedly branded Canada and its leadership “nasty” as he praised tariffs and said the U.S. had been “screwed” by trading partners including Canada.
Aug. 19 is the next pressure point: Washington plans 50% tariffs on about 5% of Canadian exports, covering goods from alcohol and hockey sticks to cement.
Mark Carney called it a “tough negotiation,” said he spoke with Trump last week and expects more talks, while saying Canada is standing up for its workers and businesses.
Washington meetings are continuing this week, with Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and negotiator Janice Charette set to meet U.S. Trade Representative Greer as Ottawa tries to avert the new duties.
The flare-up underscores worsening bilateral trade ties, even after Canada dropped a planned digital services tax and eased a streaming levy without shifting Trump’s stance.
