Reports tied to Nintendo’s guidance say completing that Bleak Beach request effectively requires raising the area’s environment level to at least 5. That could slow some returning players down, especially those who left off before pushing Bleak Beach far enough. Environment level progress is tied to town development, such as improving Pokémon comfort, building habitats and completing local requests, so it is not a simple one-step gate. Players who finished the main story may still need to revisit Bleak Beach and do extra town-building work if their environment level there is below the threshold. For players already well into the base game, the barrier should be modest. Bleak Beach is the second major area, Surf is part of normal progression there, and environment level 5 is a benchmark many players reach while advancing the campaign. But for lapsed or more casual players, Bubbly Basin is not instant-access DLC; it asks for some meaningful catch-up in the base game before the underwater expansion opens.

August 5 brings Pokémon Pokopia’s “Bubbly Basin” Expansion Pass debut on Switch 2, with Famitsu’s preview confirming a new area-specific Pokédex and an underwater-focused map.
The DLC expands catchable species with Pokémon including Wiglett and Mareanie, while footage also shows Golisopod, Stunfisk and Sharpedo in the new zones.
Underwater play adds usable abilities such as Rollout, Rototiller, Rock Smash and Leafage, and the free update unlocks Dive plus Surf upgrades for speed boosts and breaking underwater blocks.
Version 2.0.0 also adds a craftable shared storage unit with up to 140 slots, frameless glass and a new item that generates electricity underwater.
Bubbly Basin is Part 1 of a three-part Expansion Pass priced at $34.99 or £29.99, with Part 2 due in late 2026 and Part 3 in 2027.
