Researchers said the rock is only the second observed fall of its rare type and the best-preserved known example, because the homeowner quickly collected fragments before rain, soil or handling altered them.
The meteorite contained about 1.8% carbon plus nitrogen-bearing compounds, supporting the view that chemically active asteroids formed and delivered some of life’s building blocks to early Earth.
Published in Science Advances, the findings broaden evidence that small asteroids hosted complex prebiotic chemistry and could guide future searches for life-friendly salty environments beyond Earth.
