A first detailed analysis of the Hillsborough meteorite found traces of ancient salty fluids, complex organic compounds and amino acids inside a rare CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite recovered after the July 16, 2024 fall.
The study argues tiny salt-rich fragments formed near the surface of a primitive asteroid, where evaporating water concentrated into brines — a process not previously known for this type of asteroid material.
Only one meteorite was recovered from the debris field, after it crashed through a bedroom roof in New Jersey; researchers said the homeowner’s quick collection and sealing of fragments kept the sample unusually pristine.
The rock is only the 22nd observed CM meteorite fall and just the second witnessed CM1/2 fall, making it a rare record of water-driven alteration in early solar system material.
Researchers say the find broadens evidence that primitive asteroids hosted brine chemistry and may have delivered amino acids and other prebiotic ingredients to early Earth.
