Fred Warner appeared to taunt Jake Tonges after a downfield catch, triggering a multi-player scrum 15 yards in front of Kyle Shanahan during the 49ers’ first padded practice.
Dre Greenlaw escalated the clash by pulling Colton McKivitz to the ground, and Kyle Juszczyk joined the pileup; no players were ejected or visibly injured before practice ended after about 90 minutes.
Six plays earlier, Greenlaw had already shoved Christian McCaffrey out of bounds, prompting another brief scuffle that McCaffrey later dismissed as teammates competing hard.
Chris Foerster said the team had been told to avoid fights, but called the flare-ups a first-day-in-pads issue as veterans tried to set the camp’s tone.
The session came with Shanahan still managing concussion symptoms from his July 14 car crash, though assistants said he remains involved in on-field work and film review.
