The 185Hz screen looks like a real upgrade, but only a narrow competitive advantage rather than a game-changing leap. On paper, moving from 165Hz on the OnePlus 15 to a rumored 185Hz on the OnePlus 16 lowers frame persistence and can make motion look slightly smoother. For high-level mobile gamers, especially in fast shooters or MOBAs, that can help with perceived responsiveness. If OnePlus also improves touch latency through its rumored custom touch chip, gaming kernel tuning, and “eSports tri-core” system, the display could be part of a broader performance package that matters more than the refresh-rate number alone. The catch is that the gain from 165Hz to 185Hz is modest. At 165Hz, each frame lasts about 6.06 milliseconds; at 185Hz, it drops to about 5.41 milliseconds. That is a difference of roughly 0.65 milliseconds per frame. Most players will not notice that in isolation, and many mobile games do not run anywhere near 185 frames per second anyway. If games are capped well below that, the practical benefit shrinks further. So for October’s launch, the 185Hz claim risks sounding like marketing if OnePlus cannot show real-world support: games that can actually hit those frame rates, lower touch latency, stable thermals, and sustained performance from the Snapdragon platform. If it delivers all of that, the screen is a credible esports-focused feature. If not, 185Hz is mostly a spec-sheet headline.
