Q: If premium sleep earbuds completely fail at tracking sleep stages, are tech companies just selling us expensive placebos?

No. But if companies market rough stage estimates as hard sleep science, the value proposition gets shaky. The Ozlo Sleepbuds 2 appear to work well as sleep aids. In testing, they were comfortable for side sleeping, stayed in place, and masked disruptive noise effectively. On the basics, they were also reasonably close to the Oura Ring 5 for total sleep time, sleep onset, sleep window, and awake time. That means they can give users useful information about when they slept and help create a calmer bedtime routine. Where they fall short is sleep staging. The review found major misses on REM, deep, and light sleep. That is not unique to Ozlo. Consumer wearables generally infer stages from motion, heart rate, breathing, temperature, and oxygen-related signals. They do not measure brain activity directly. Clinical sleep staging still depends on polysomnography, which uses EEG and other sensors. Reviews and meta-analyses consistently show wearables are much better at sleep-versus-wake detection than at classifying REM, deep, and light sleep. So these products are not necessarily “placebos.” If they reduce noise, improve comfort, and help someone sleep better, that benefit is real. But they are not medical-grade trackers, and stage data should be treated as approximate at best. The real issue is product framing: buyers should judge premium sleep earbuds mainly on comfort, noise masking, battery life, and whether they improve sleep in practice—not on precise REM or deep-sleep charts.

Oura Ring 5 and Ozlo Sleepbuds 2 matched almost exactly on sleep duration and wake time, but the earbuds missed badly on sleep stages in side-by-side testing.
One night, Oura logged 1 hour 26 minutes of REM versus 17 minutes on the Sleepbuds 2; the earbuds also overstated light sleep by more than 2 hours and understated deep sleep by 42 minutes.
At $279, the Sleepbuds 2 still won on comfort and core sleep use: they stayed in place overnight, worked for side sleeping, and masked enough neighborhood noise to help the reviewer fall asleep.
Battery life improved to about 2 nights from 1.5, but sleep data took around a minute to load each morning and required the user to stay near the open charging case.
The review concludes the Sleepbuds 2 are better bought as premium sleep earbuds with environmental sensing than as a reliable replacement for a dedicated sleep tracker.
