It is a real bargain only if you were already planning to pay for Straight Talk service; otherwise, the cheap phone price can quickly stop looking cheap. Samsung’s promise of six years of software updates also adds unusual long-term value for a budget phone. The catch is the required service. To get that price, buyers must open a new line and activate at least Straight Talk’s $45-a-month Silver Unlimited plan. That means the true entry cost is not $39 but about $84 in the first month before taxes and fees, and more if the buyer keeps service for several months. Over a year, the plan costs far more than the phone discount saves. Still, this is not a classic contract trap. Straight Talk is prepaid and no-contract, so customers are not signing a multiyear agreement with early termination penalties in the traditional postpaid sense. The bigger risk is simply overpaying for service if a cheaper plan or bring-your-own-phone option would meet your needs. For someone who wants Verizon-based prepaid service and needs a decent phone immediately, this is a strong value. For someone chasing a “$39 phone” without considering the monthly plan, it is clever marketing more than a true $39 deal.
