The Wisconsin Professional Police Association urged the public to wait for the independent investigation into Madison police's fatal shooting of 38-year-old Corey Ruiz, saying key facts have not yet been released.
The group said public recordings may show only part of a fast-moving encounter and that deadly force must be judged on the totality of evidence, including witness accounts, forensic findings and video.
Wednesday's shooting followed officers' attempt to detain Ruiz on Madison's near-east side; police said he was armed with a knife, had been checking parked vehicles and injured one of four officers.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation has interviewed witnesses and will send its findings to the Dane County District Attorney, while the involved officer's identity is expected soon.
