Madison Officer Kills Man in His 30s After 1:35 p.m. Knife Struggle, Injuring 2 Officers

A man in his 30s died at a hospital around 4 p.m. after a Madison officer shot him during a street struggle in the Marquette neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.
Police said officers were responding to a bicycle-theft and vehicle-checking report, chased the man after he fled on a bike, and confronted him again near Baldwin and Williamson streets around 1:30 p.m.
During the struggle, the man pulled a large fixed-blade knife and wounded one officer; a Taser was deployed but failed before that injured officer fired the fatal shot. A second officer was also hurt.
Four officers were involved, but only one fired; all were placed on administrative leave, and Wisconsin's Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the case.
Cellphone video of the encounter is circulating online, while Dane County Executive Melissa Agard called for a full, transparent accounting of the death.
