If forced to choose, the Padres would be more likely to trade Mason Miller, not their top prospect. The clearest reason is practical: the “top prospect” framing is partly outdated. Leo De Vries, the prospect most associated with San Diego’s past deadline gamble, was already traded to acquire Miller. The Padres’ current top prospect is Ethan Salas, and with a farm system widely viewed as one of baseball’s thinnest, moving Salas would further strip an already depleted pipeline. Miller, by contrast, is the club’s most valuable trade chip if San Diego pivots. He is performing like an elite closer, is under control through 2029, and would command a major return in a market short on impact sellers. Rival evaluators believe that kind of asset could bring back multiple premium young players, exactly the sort of package the Padres need after years of aggressive prospect spending. That does not mean a Miller trade is likely today. A.J. Preller is still more inclined to buy or make only marginal upgrades because San Diego is only a few games out of the wild card and he is rarely eager to sell. He has also said he wants Miller in San Diego long term. But he has not ruled anything out, and if the Padres slide further before Aug. 3, Miller becomes the logical piece to move. So if San Diego is truly choosing between sacrificing its last elite prospect asset or undoing past mistakes with one major trade, Miller is the more plausible answer.
