Probably not—unless Detroit fades in the next 10 days. The Tigers are the deadline’s pivot point, but their recent play has pushed them toward holding Tarik Skubal rather than cashing him in. Detroit has played at roughly a 100-win pace since June 1 and sits within about 4.5 to 5 games of a wild-card spot, which has led rival executives to believe the club is more likely to keep Skubal if it stays in the race. In a weak American League, an ace of his caliber gives Detroit a real reason to try. If the Tigers do decide to sell, Skubal would command one of the biggest returns of this deadline, and possibly one of the largest for any pitcher in recent years. He is a back-to-back Cy Young winner, among the most valuable starters in baseball, and is not just a short-term rental, with control beyond this season. Industry expectations for a Skubal deal center on at least one elite prospect, another Top 100-type talent, and additional pieces. Clubs such as the Dodgers, Braves, Cubs and Rays have the prospect depth to engage. The key variable is not Skubal’s value but Detroit’s standings. ESPN’s Buster Olney and Jeff Passan both frame the Tigers as the market’s linchpin: if Detroit keeps winning, Skubal likely stays; if the club slips and decides it is not a true postseason threat, the pressure to maximize his value will intensify quickly. So the most likely answer today is no—but the door remains open, and the price would be enormous.

The Dodgers look like the most likely team to pay the premium to separate from the field. That view rests on both motive and means. Los Angeles is chasing a third straight NL pennant, has one of the deepest farm systems in baseball, and, as Buster Olney noted, rarely lets a deadline pass without improving. The added reporting points the same way: the Dodgers have the prospect depth and financial flexibility to absorb the kind of cost that would come with a top-of-market arm such as Tarik Skubal or another impact piece if Detroit or another “in-between” club finally blinks. The Rays are the strongest American League candidate to make a similarly aggressive move. Their deep system, strong standing in a wide-open AL, and fit for controllable talent such as Hunter Goodman make them a credible club to pay a haul. The Yankees also have urgency, especially at catcher and for a right-handed bat, but their needs are narrower and the market at those positions is thin, which could limit how far they can push. If the deadline turns on one blockbuster, Detroit remains the hinge. Skubal is the player most likely to force a bidding war, and the Braves, Dodgers and Rays are among the teams best positioned to meet that price. But if the market stays as muddled as Jeff Passan expects, the Dodgers still stand out as the safest bet to spend heavily on the best available upgrade, even if it is more on the margins than a true franchise-shaking deal.
