Body-camera footage released this week shows Meriden Officer Anthony Offiaeli shooting 38-year-old Robert Lee Jenkins III on July 19 after repeatedly ordering him to drop a baseball bat.
Investigators said Jenkins kept striking a motionless man on a front lawn, swinging downward four times as Offiaeli advanced and radioed for backup before firing multiple rounds.
Two men died in the encounter: the bat attack victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and Jenkins died at Hartford Hospital at 11:30 p.m. after treatment.
Autopsies ruled both deaths homicides—Jenkins from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and the other man from blunt-force head injuries—while toxicology results and Jenkins' death certificate remained pending.
The Connecticut Office of Inspector General, state police, Meriden police and the New Haven state's attorney's office are continuing to investigate the shooting.
