Summary
More than 100 pounds came off in seven months—about 14 pounds a month—letting a ZDNET author complete an 80-mile Camino Francés hike and keep the weight off six months later.
Mounjaro drove the loss despite side effects including nausea, lethargy and gastric issues, while an Apple Watch Ultra and Withings Body Smart scale tracked fitness, weight and lean mass.
The $110 scale mattered because GLP-1 users can lose muscle as well as fat—sometimes up to 39% of total weight lost—so the author monitored body composition, kept protein high and added kettlebells and weights.
Happy Scales proved the most useful app for trend-based weight tracking and deadline planning, while MyFitnessPal helped occasionally; HRV and sleep tracking were less useful in daily practice.
Training continued throughout the cut at at least 100 miles a month, building to 45 pounds carried for 10 miles; the author has logged more than 650 miles this year and now plans the full 500-mile Camino in 2027.
