Summary
Four people died in the July 5 shooting in Rittman, including Sgt. Scott Ries, a 10-year police veteran who was pronounced dead at Summa Akron City Hospital.
Authorities said officers answering a 9:30 p.m. 911 call about a break-in and shots fired immediately came under fire in what sheriffs described as a domestic disturbance involving former couple Christine McWilliams and Brandon Fazekas.
Wayne County officials identified the other dead as Christine McWilliams, 43, her daughter McKinley McWilliams, 13, and Fazekas, 38, whose wound was consistent with suicide; four Medina County deputies were shot, two hospitalized in stable condition.
K9 Vick of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office was also shot and remained in serious condition as the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation took over the case with local agencies assisting.
Gov. Mike DeWine ordered flags lowered in Wayne County for Ries, while residents and officers from other departments gathered at the Rittman police station to mourn the loss in the town of about 6,100.
