UK Regulators Warn Firms Remain Liable for AI Agent Errors Across 7 Legal Areas

Summary
Four UK regulators said companies deploying personal AI agents still bear legal responsibility when those systems make mistakes, rejecting any attempt to shift blame to the software’s autonomy.
The Digital Regulation Cooperation Forum said existing rules already apply across seven areas, including competition, consumer protection, data use, online safety, financial services, payments and cybersecurity.
The watchdogs urged firms to show consumers when an agent is acting for them, how authority is granted and how personal data is used as agents begin making purchases and contacting businesses.
The warning lands amid wider uncertainty over autonomous AI governance: Gartner has flagged rising legal disputes over AI-driven decisions, and the same UK regulators recently sought input on a 2026-27 plan to reduce overlap.
