Grand Theft Auto VI Opens PS5 Pre-Download November 10, Requiring 212GB Before November 19 Launch

Q: With GTA 6 demanding a massive 212GB of space, how many players will be forced to buy expensive hard drives just to play?

A large share of PS5 players may need to free space, but not all will have to buy new storage just for GTA 6. The game requires 212GB, while a standard PS5’s 825GB internal drive typically leaves about 670GB usable after system files; the PS5 Slim’s 1TB drive leaves more, but still not enough for players with several big games already installed. In practical terms, many users can make room by deleting or moving other titles rather than buying hardware immediately. One 212GB install is manageable on a mostly empty PS5, but it becomes a problem for players who also keep other large games such as Call of Duty installed, since those can also exceed 200GB. That means the people most likely to feel forced into an upgrade are heavy digital buyers and players who prefer to keep large libraries ready at all times. If they do upgrade, the cheapest route is not necessarily “an expensive hard drive.” PS5 games cannot be played directly from a standard external hard drive; they need the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 NVMe expansion SSD. Current 2TB PS5-compatible SSDs are widely available, with cited prices around $124 for some WD models and roughly $199 to $220 for some Samsung 2TB options, while 4TB drives run much higher. So the real answer is that many players will need to manage storage, but only a subset will truly be forced to spend extra. GTA 6’s size is big enough to expose how cramped the PS5 can be, especially for players already near capacity.

November 10 at local midnight is when PS5 players who pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI can start pre-downloading the game ahead of its November 19 release.
212GB of free storage is required on PS5, prompting Sony to urge players to clear space or expand storage now so the game is ready at launch.
Pre-orders are available through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers, with the Ultimate Edition adding exclusive vehicles, weapons and apparel tied to Jason and Lucia’s story.
Sony also advised players to confirm their PlayStation account details and finish any console setup before launch, saying more GTA VI information will follow later this year.
