Summary
The U.S. Army said Monday its cyber investigators are examining whether August refrigeration failures at military commissaries were part of the same suspected campaign now hitting European retailers.
On Aug. 26, freezers at Fort Huachuca in Arizona abruptly switched to defrost mode and spoiled all stored food; Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island reported commissary refrigeration problems the same day.
Across Europe, retailers in at least seven additional countries reported refrigeration malfunctions Monday, after hundreds of French grocery stores were hit last month in what officials called a cyberattack.
The disruptions have spoiled food and thinned store supplies, while experts say the incidents show hallmarks of cyberattacks even though investigators have not confirmed a single cause.
The Pentagon acknowledged speculation about a broader cyber incident and said its inspector general is also investigating, widening concern that food-cooling systems may be a new supply-chain target.
