Seahawks Land 8-Time Pro Bowler Quenton Nelson for 2027 Third and 2028 Fifth

Q: If Quenton Nelson is still playing at an elite level, why were the Colts willing to trade him in the middle of the season?

The Colts were willing to trade Quenton Nelson not because he has declined, but because their season and organizational timeline changed. Indianapolis is 2-5, fired general manager Chris Ballard, and appears to be pivoting into an early rebuild. In that context, even elite veterans become movable if they are not clearly part of the next competitive window. Nelson is still playing at a high level — reports say he has not allowed a sack this season and has posted a low pressure rate — but he is 30, turns 31 in March, and is in the final year of his contract. That contract situation is central. Nelson and the Colts did not reach an extension before the season, so Indianapolis faced the possibility of either paying premium money again to an older guard or losing leverage if it waited. For a rebuilding team, turning an expiring veteran into draft capital and added cap flexibility can make more sense than keeping a star through a losing season. The broader context also matters. The Colts reportedly are expected to overhaul the roster, and they traded DeForest Buckner the same day. They are also trying to replenish picks after previous aggressive moves, including being without a 2027 first-rounder. In that light, a 2027 third-round pick and 2028 fifth-rounder fit a reset strategy. So the trade says less about Nelson’s play than about Indianapolis deciding that a respected, high-cost veteran on an expiring deal did not match its new direction.

Seattle will send Indianapolis a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-rounder for Quenton Nelson, with the trade still pending the guard’s physical.
Nelson gives John Schneider another major midseason addition without costing Seattle a first- or second-round pick, preserving flexibility for more deadline moves.
Seattle still projects to hold 10 picks in the 2027 draft, including compensatory selections in Rounds 3, 4, 5, 5 and 6 despite moving its native third-rounder.
That draft cushion helps explain why the Seahawks stockpiled comp picks in free agency, letting them chase a Super Bowl push while staying well supplied for a stronger 2027 class.
