Tech Companies Unveil 14 New Gadgets, Led by Turntable, CD Player and Smart Home Devices

Q: What hidden AI restrictions are blocking Apple's newest smart home hub from reaching European buyers this year?

Apple’s new HomeView is being kept out of the European Union because its core feature, Siri AI, is still unavailable on iPhone and iPad in the EU. Apple says that without Siri AI on iOS, it cannot offer the full HomeView experience there. The underlying restriction is tied to Apple’s regulatory dispute with the EU over interoperability rules under the Digital Markets Act. Apple argues that the EU’s interpretation would force it to give rival voice assistants the same deep access that Siri has to sensitive user data and system functions, including messages, files, purchases, and app controls. Apple has said it proposed solutions, but that regulators did not accept them. That matters because HomeView is built around Siri AI, not just as a voice assistant but as the system that powers personal context, face- and voice-based personalization, and cross-device continuity. Apple’s own product materials say the device can draw on calendars, messages, reminders, and app data when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad. If those iOS-linked Siri AI features are blocked in the EU, HomeView loses much of what makes it distinct. Apple says it is “working constructively with the EU” to find a path forward, but it has given no timeline. For now, the hidden barrier is not hardware or language support, but the absence of EU-approved Siri AI access on Apple’s mobile platforms.
