DWTS Suspends Val Chmerkovskiy for 1 Week Over Will Smith Slap TikTok

Q: Did BBC's covert social listening tools catch Val Chmerkovskiy's deleted Will Smith joke, forcing his sudden DWTS suspension?

No. There is no evidence that BBC Studios used covert monitoring tools to catch Val Chmerkovskiy’s deleted TikTok or that such tools “forced” his suspension. What is documented is much simpler: Chmerkovskiy posted the “Fresh Prince” remark, it was seen, screenshotted, and reported by entertainment outlets and fans before or after it was deleted. Carrie Ann Inaba herself said on social media that news coverage brought the post to her attention. BBC Studios then publicly said the post was “inappropriate” and announced he would sit out the next episode. The privacy-policy material cited online does show that BBC Studios says it may collect information from social platforms and use “social listening” to understand public perception of its brands and talent. But that is a broad corporate disclosure, not proof that it actively tracked this specific deleted post or used a hidden tool to trigger discipline in this case. The strongest evidence points to a public backlash and media amplification, not a secret surveillance operation. Chmerkovskiy apologized through his representative and on Instagram, calling the post a “poor decision” and “bad judgment,” and acknowledged that his words were harmful regardless of his intent. So the suspension appears to have resulted from the public circulation of the deleted joke and the company’s response to it, not from any confirmed covert social-listening intervention.

BBC Studios barred Val Chmerkovskiy from next week’s Dancing with the Stars after a deleted TikTok said viewers “almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom last night.”
The post followed judge Carrie Ann Inaba’s harsh on-air critique of wife Jenna Johnson’s lift, and was widely read as invoking Will Smith’s 2022 Oscars slap in her defense.
Chmerkovskiy called it a “poor decision” and “bad judgment,” said he never meant to imply violence, and apologized publicly and directly to Inaba.
Jenna Dewan, Chmerkovskiy’s celebrity partner, is set to dance with Alan Bersten during next week’s Dedication Night while the suspension is served.
