Ed McCaffrey Defends 4-2 Broncos QB Bo Nix After 107-Yard Night Draws Fire

Q: Is an ugly victory enough to silence critics, or does a stagnant offense reveal a deeper issue for Denver?

An ugly win is enough to quiet the loudest overreaction about Bo Nix’s effort, but it is not enough to dismiss Denver’s offensive problems. Ed McCaffrey has a strong point: questioning Nix’s heart after a win is excessive. Denver is 4-2 against a difficult schedule, and winning close games still matters. Nix also avoided turnovers against a Seattle defense that had been forcing them, which fits Sean Payton’s apparent risk-averse plan. That is a fair defense of the quarterback and the result. But the broader criticism of the offense is justified. Denver produced only 168 total yards, managed just 38 after halftime, went scoreless after the first quarter until the overtime field goal, and repeatedly put its defense back on the field for 82 snaps. Nix finished with 107 passing yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, and little downfield impact. Denver’s longest play was 16 yards. Those are not one-night anomalies; Nix has acknowledged the offense is struggling to create explosive plays, and Payton has said the Broncos must become “more effective” and “more efficient.” The clearest reading is that Denver has a good enough defense to carry it through stretches like this, but that formula is fragile. Payton himself noted 4-2 could easily be 2-4. So the win should stop personal attacks and preserve perspective, but it should not silence football criticism. If the offense remains this compressed and conservative, Denver’s record may hold for now, but its ceiling will stay limited.

Ed McCaffrey pushed back Friday after Bo Nix was blasted for his play in Denver’s 17-14 overtime win over Seattle, writing on X: “Enough already. Apparently winning isn’t enough anymore.”
107 passing yards on 17-of-27 throwing and just 168 total offensive yards fueled the criticism, with Prime Video analyst Ryan Fitzpatrick calling Nix’s play “disrespectful” to the position and questioning his effort.
McCaffrey said criticism of Nix’s throws, decisions and the offense is “fair game,” but drew the line at attacks on the quarterback’s heart and desire to win.
Denver is 4-2 despite a tough early schedule, and Nix is only six games removed from returning after the ankle fracture he suffered in January’s playoffs.
