Summary
Jay Clayton said foreign commercial and state-backed espionage is a real and growing threat in the AI race, warning U.S. companies and the government to guard against attempts to erode American leadership.
AI amplifies existing cyber risks to interconnected U.S. digital infrastructure tied to public services, defense and global communications, he said, making system hardening a central priority.
The warning followed the recently revealed OpenAI case in which Saudi national Abdulrahman Alfozan was charged with allegedly installing a recording device in an executive conference room; prosecutors said he had booked a one-way ticket to Saudi Arabia before his arrest.
At the White House on Thursday, Clayton said the new AI task force held its first meeting and created 3 subcommittees covering incident reporting and response, critical infrastructure coordination with industry, and law enforcement responsibility.
Clayton, appointed AI czar earlier this month, said the administration aims to stay ahead of rivals including China, Russia, Iran and North Korea after Trump last month secured a 'morally binding' AI safety accord with industry leaders.
