Summary
Four people died at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend — three children ages 5, 8 and 11 and a teacher — after a 16-year-old opened fire Thursday afternoon.
Police said the suspect got into the school by shooting through locked doors; dispatch received reports at 12:59 p.m., officers arrived by 1:02 p.m., and learned almost immediately the shooter was down.
Two survivors — a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher — were hospitalized in critical condition, while students were evacuated room by room and reunited with families at Journey Church.
Authorities now say an armed bystander likely shot and killed the teenager inside the school, as local police and the FBI continue an investigation expected to keep a large presence at the campus for days.
Bend-La Pine schools canceled Friday classes, and vigils were scheduled for Thursday evening as Oregon officials praised the intervention and mourned another U.S. school shooting.
