Giants' Cam Skattebo Regrets Overtime Fumble in Field Goal Range as Commanders Waste Final 12 Seconds

Q: Will a devastating overtime fumble overshadow the incredible offensive performance that saved New York from defeat?

Not entirely. Cam Skattebo’s overtime fumble will be remembered because it nearly turned a comeback into a loss, but it is unlikely to erase how important New York’s offensive rally was in salvaging the tie. The Giants were down 14 points with about 11 minutes left and looked finished before Jameis Winston led a sharp second-half turnaround. He threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, including the late game-tying strike to Malik Nabers. Nabers finished with 11 catches for 121 yards and a score, while Isaiah Likely added 11 receptions, 94 yards and two touchdowns. That production is the main reason New York escaped with a 27-27 tie at all. Skattebo’s mistake still matters. He fumbled at the Washington 24 with the Giants already in field-goal range in sudden death, and he admitted the ball security failure likely cost New York a win. In a cleaner finish, that would have been the defining play. But the game’s ending was too chaotic for one player to absorb all the attention. Dominic Zvada missed three field goals, including one in overtime, and Washington then produced an even more glaring mistake by letting the clock expire in field-goal range without getting a final kick off. That blunder shifted much of the postgame spotlight away from Skattebo. So the fumble will remain part of the story, especially inside the Giants’ building. Publicly, though, it will share space with Winston’s comeback, the huge days from Nabers and Likely, and Washington’s stunning late collapse.

Field-goal range turned costly when Cam Skattebo fumbled on the first play after the two-minute warning in overtime, a mistake he said cost the Giants the game.
Daron Payne punched the ball loose as Skattebo fought for extra yards, and the running back said he should have prioritized ball security even if it meant being tackled for a loss.
Washington then drove into position for a potential winning kick, but a Jayden Daniels run with 12 seconds left drained the clock before the Commanders could spike the ball.
Skattebo said that "insane" ending may soften the backlash, though he still put the result largely on himself despite Dominic Zvada missing three field goals, including one earlier in overtime.
