Summary
Marco Rubio said he would not discuss a Wall Street Journal report alleging Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle asked a Trump donor to pay a $100,000 credit card bill before her confirmation hearing.
The report said Guilfoyle promised the donor access to administration officials in return; Rubio said he knew of the story but did not know whether it was true.
Athens became the setting for a second day of deflection: Rubio again praised the U.S. embassy and Guilfoyle's performance but would not say whether he would open an investigation.
House and Senate Democrats have called for a probe, adding to scrutiny after earlier Journal reports that Guilfoyle promoted a Greek company's interests and let its lobbyist into private diplomatic meetings.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and former California prosecutor, has denied wrongdoing, while Rubio has previously defended her.
