Summary
A bus carrying 39 people to Winter Haven High School overturned after a Chevrolet sedan crossed the center line and struck its rear wheels, setting off a four-vehicle crash that killed a 10th-grade girl and a Jeep occupant.
Sheriff Grady Judd said the impact tore off a tire, sending the bus into an oncoming Jeep that caught fire; authorities have not said why the sedan drifted across the road and are investigating.
Five to seven people were taken to hospitals, one in critical condition, while AdventHealth Heart of Florida and Lakeland Regional Health each said they received 10 patients who were later released.
More than 100 emergency responders worked the scene and reunited families as Lucerne Park Road was expected to stay closed most of Monday; Judd called it the area's worst bus tragedy in decades.
