Summary
10 legal permanent residents were indicted in Minneapolis after prosecutors said they falsely claimed U.S. citizenship to register or vote in Minnesota elections, with alleged conduct spanning 2022 through August's primary.
Nine of the 10 are accused of casting ballots, including seven in the 2024 presidential election; a 61-year-old Liberian woman is charged only with registering to vote as a non-citizen.
Six defendants have entered not guilty pleas, and all were released after separate initial court appearances on Wednesday; most face felony counts, while two are charged only with misdemeanors.
The defendants, ages 43 to 78, include people from Europe, Africa, Brazil and Canada, and prosecutors said convictions could bring jail time as well as immigration consequences.
