Kirk Family Files Wrongful Death Claim Against UVU Over 'I Got You Covered' Text

A notice of claim filed last week says Charlie Kirk’s family plans to pursue wrongful-death claims against Utah, Utah Valley University and officials over security failures at the Sept. 10, 2025 event where he was fatally shot.
The filing centers on an alleged text from UVU Police Chief Jeffrey Long telling Turning Point USA organizers, “I got you covered” after they raised concerns about rooftop access overlooking the courtyard.
That assurance could be the family’s best route around Utah’s broad governmental-immunity law, with attorney Randolph Rice arguing organizers may claim they detrimentally relied on the promise of rooftop protection.
The claim also alleges no officer was physically posted on the roof and no one monitored camera feeds as the 23-year-old suspect, Tyler Robinson, moved through the area; he has pleaded not guilty and could face the death penalty.
Legal analysts say Utah law strongly shields agencies from liability for third-party criminal acts, though such cases can still end in out-of-court settlements.
