Apple’s new Extended Erase appears aimed at residual data in storage blocks that a normal iPhone reset may not explicitly overwrite, including unused or previously freed space where traces of old files, caches, logs, or other recoverable remnants can persist. Code found in iOS 27.2 beta 2 indicates Extended Erase is a renamed version of “Overwrite Storage.” The beta description says it uses block erase technology and “replaces all content with a predefined pattern,” including storage “that is not in use.” That is the key difference from today’s standard “Erase All Content and Settings,” which removes user data and settings and resets the device, but does not appear designed to overwrite every area of flash storage. In practical terms, Extended Erase seems targeted at hidden leftovers such as deleted-file remnants, abandoned app data, temporary system files, caches, and data fragments in unallocated space. Those are the kinds of traces that ordinary factory resets may leave behind at the physical storage level even though the phone is no longer accessible in normal use. The likely purpose is stronger privacy for resale, trade-in, enterprise handoff, or high-security situations where users want the storage media itself more thoroughly cleared, not just the device reset and cryptographic access removed. Apple has not yet publicly documented the feature, so the exact implementation could still change before release.

Apple released the second iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 developer betas one week after the first test build, with downloads available through Settings for registered developers.
iOS 27.2 adds a redesigned Health app with new Insight and Longevity tabs and expands Siri AI to new languages, alongside other features Apple has outlined separately.
The 27.2 rollout remains unusual because Apple has not yet issued iOS 27.1, which is expected to debut before the iPhone Duo launches on Oct. 23.
That delayed 27.1 update is set to power the iPhone Duo's dual-display features, including new app layouts, side-by-side multitasking, a vertical dock and exclusive camera capabilities.
Code in 27.2 beta 2 has also pointed to unreleased additions such as an AutoLock anti-snatching tool, Apple Music updates and new CarPlay Ultra features, suggesting a busy October software cycle.
