Some SSI recipients can face a “zero-deposit month” in 2026 because of the way the Social Security Administration shifts payments when the first of a month falls on a weekend or holiday. SSI is normally paid on the first business day of the month, so if that date is not a business day, the payment is sent early in the prior month. That can create two deposits in one month and then none in the next calendar month. In 2026, a key example is July and August. Because Aug. 1, 2026 falls on a Saturday, August’s SSI payment is issued early on Friday, July 31. Recipients therefore see two deposits in July—July 1 and July 31—but no SSI deposit at all during August. The same pattern can happen later in the year around other month-start conflicts with weekends or holidays. The danger is that many SSI recipients live month to month on very limited income. The average SSI payment is about $737, and for many households that money covers rent, food, medicine, utilities, and transportation. A month with no new deposit can feel like benefits were cut off, even though the earlier payment was simply advanced. If recipients spend the two July deposits as if they were extra money, they may have little or nothing left to survive August. The practical impact is budgeting, not loss of benefits. The total annual amount does not change, but the calendar quirk can create severe cash-flow stress for people with almost no savings.

The top 2026 retirement benefit reaches $5,181 a month for workers who claimed at age 70 after earning at or above the taxable maximum, versus $4,152 at full retirement age and $2,969 at age 62.
Average payments are far lower: retired workers received $2,085.98 a month in July 2026, and the average across all Social Security beneficiaries was $1,940.08.
October brings the next payment cycle and the 2027 COLA announcement on Oct. 14, with current estimates pointing to a 3.4% to 3.6% increase after 2026's 2.8% adjustment.
