Derek Spencer, 44, remained at large in Placer County after deputies said he killed a woman, then disappeared into forest near Iowa Hill.
Around 10:30 a.m., deputies located Spencer, but he allegedly rammed a patrol vehicle with a car stolen in El Dorado County and fled; by 2 p.m., officials said he had fired at deputies and a sheriff's helicopter.
Iowa Hill residents were told to lock their doors and stay inside as authorities described Spencer as armed and dangerous; no law enforcement officers were reported injured.
A nearby fire on Iowa Hill Road could not be attacked by crews because it was too close to the active shooter search.
Court records show Spencer had been arrested three times this month and was released on bond after Sacramento County sheriff's office arrests on Sept. 3 and Sept. 16.
