South Bend police said one shot fired around 7:30 p.m. near Eddy Street Commons wounded a woman in the leg and injured an officer, possibly from ricochet or shrapnel.
About 20 officers were responding to reports of an armed man pointing a gun at people after a post-tailgate fight when the shot rang out as crowds left Notre Dame's tailgating areas.
Both victims were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover; police said the suspected shooter fled west and remained at large.
Eddy Street Commons, nearby businesses and parking garages were evacuated and locked down for the investigation, while police urged the public to avoid the area.
The shooting followed earlier campus alerts during the Notre Dame-Michigan State game; police later said a separate shooting about 1 mile away that killed 2 was not known to be related.
