Towing splits the lineup unexpectedly: the smaller 5.7-liter is rated up to 13,700 pounds in the Silverado and 13,500 in the Sierra, versus 9,700 and 9,400 pounds for the 6.6-liter.
GM said the 5.7-liter targets towing and hauling, while the 6.6-liter is aimed at buyers seeking maximum performance and higher-end trims rather than the highest tow rating.
Flint Engine Operations will build the V8s first, with added capacity planned at Tonawanda in New York and St. Catharines in Canada as GM doubles down on gasoline pickups.
